LLOBET CONTEST HISTORY
Since the end of the 19th to the beginning of the 20th century, until the arrival of the Spanish Civil War, Barcelona was considered the world centre of classical guitar. Researchers and historians refer to it as the Golden Age of the Classical Guitar. Front pages of newspapers confirmed this. But the historical circumstances displaced the instrument to a second place and, its lack of support, made this historic work gradually disappear from Catalonian musical culture.
In 1995 the I Concurso Internacional de Guitarra de Barcelona was created,, a homage to María Luisa Anido, under the direction of its founder, the Chilean maestro Eulogio Dávalos. On this occasion, an altruistic event was organized, that maestros and professors claimed was a collective necessity. At the end of the competition, the famous Dame of the Guitar, Maria Luisa Anido, requested an act of generosity sot that the event was recognised as the claim of her dear maestro, the Catalonian guitarist and composer, Miquel Llobet.
In this way, after ten years and unceasing requests, in 2005 it received the public support necessary to call the second edition, where finally it received the name of Certamen Internacional de Guitarra de Barcelona “Miquel Llobet”, paying justice to this forgotten virtuoso from Barcelona, who made the harmonization of popular Catalonian songs so famous all over the world. A year later, the rediscovery of the remains of Llobet in the Poblenou Cemetery was proclaimed, today his remains are looked after by the Cercle Guitarristic a Catalunya, and maestros of the entire world claim his figure with an annual homage.
In the last ten editions, the official venue has been the Conservatori Municipal de Música de Barcelona. The new venue for this eleventh edition is the L’Auditori de Barcelona, neuralgic musical centre. The Museu de la Música de Barcelona, a venue where one of the best guitar collections of the world is conserved thanks to maestro Llobet, is the site for the competition development. The finals take place with a string quartet in the Sala Oriol Martorell de L’Auditori.
The Certamen Llobet has gained extraordinary prestige, confirmed by the recognition of great personalities of the world of musical art and acknowledgements by the most important specialised institutions. Today, it is considered as an event of excellence and artistic quality, contributing to the enriching of the musical tissue of the city, retorna a la guitarra clásica el prestigio mundial perdido y returning classical guitar to a lost world prestige and encouraging young talents to be motivated in new concert challenges.
